Her Town

According to some old timers on my job, Heather Heaton must be a happy woman. They think she has got the best job in the world, being a journalist. On top of that she is writing all articles, taking all pictures and editing everything for a little regional newspaper. 'It is the perfect start for a career in journalism', they mumble, in the meantime thinking about retirement, 'because all your readers know who you are, and nowhere you will get as much feedback on your writing by your readers. 'There is no way to learn the occupation better.

Such is the live and the work of Heather Heaton, working for the Millerton News in Millerton, upstate New York. Writer Susan Orlean described her in the brilliant essay 'Her Town', part of a collection of short stories, published as: 'The Bullfighter Checks Her Makeup: My Encounters With Extraordinary People'.
The short stories gives a nice view of live in Millerton, and all things that matter in a small, white, republican, American town. Live as reporter of the Millerton News is simple: being the one and only reporter you only have to take care that each week's new front page features seven or eight stories, and two or three photographs. All stories have bylines, all pictures have credit-lines. That's it.
Like the June 15 edition, with seven articles written by Heather: Elementary Students Learn About Diversity, More Answers Needed About Asessor's Job, Egg Rolls, Bagels, Coming To RR Plaza, Festival Was Just The Berries, Webutuck Board Adresses Concerns Raised At Workshop, Doc Bartlett Remembered As 'All-Round Good Man' and Funds Still Needed.
As I have been travelling quit a bit trough New England, I envie Heather Heaton for living and working there. Or do I tend to forget once more that traveling through a nice and beautiful country is so very different 'from working and living there?
