Bye bye Movable Type, hello WordPress

This is why I’m finally leaving my beloved Movable Type behind me, after 12 years. It’s all in Six Apart’s answer to my question regarding an update for MT, which I’m using since 2004 as my favorite content management system for my website. Back then, I payed 340 dollar for a multi user license.

‘Hi Léon
The current release of Movable Type is version 6.3.2. Unfortunately, since the current release is 3 major versions ahead of your Movable Type 3.17 installation, this does not allow you to obtain a free upgrade to Movable Type 6.x. However, you may purchase a Movable Type 6.x upgrade license for $499 – 50% of the cost of a new Movable Type 6.x license ($999)’. You may purchase a Movable Type 6.x upgrade license by browsing to https://www.movabletype.com/#buy, clicking the ‘Upgrade’ button, and completing the purchase process. If you have any questions or need additional information, please feel free to reply to this email. Regards’.

With this answer Six Apart has made things easy for me: it’s bye bye time to Movable Type. Pity, if Six Apart had done things different from the start it would have been much bigger than WordPress today.

Anyway, I’m moving house, to WordPress. Ran the famous five minute installation, in three minutes. A minute or so later WordPress had imported my complete archive from 1995 until now into MySQL, and parsed the whole kit and caboodle on a temporary shadow site: @krijnen.com/wp

Pretty impressive. It looks what is it is right now, a very basic starter site, build on some simple templates. But everything works, so it’s time for playing around, rebuilding templates, tuning and perfecting things over the weekend – and the weeks and years to come.
Ich freue mich! 🙂
