128 - 10 - 93 - 85 - 10 - 128 - 98 - 112 - 6 - 6 - 25 - 126 - 39 - 1 - 68 - 78

Because I wrote something about Digital Fortress in my previous column (in Dutch, over here) I took the book out of the shelf for the first time since I read it while traveling in 1999-2000, to notice for the first time the book doesn't end where it ended for me by then. I know it sounds pretty stupid, and I realise it is, but the paperback version does not end with the epilogue and the death of Tokugen Numataka on page 430.
I probably barely made it to that page by the time, in my tent in Queensland, only to fall asleep, not noticing the lonely line of numbers on page 431:
128-10-93-85-10-128-98-112-6-6-25-126-39-1-68-78
Well, as it is, feed them to Google, and see what's happening. Only two hits on Dutch pages, but lots of them in English. The answer, not surprising, lies in the Caesarian Box that Suzan Fletcher an David Becker are using to break the code.
Guess I've got to start reading the Da Vinci Code now :-)

42=DB=Dan Brown.
Don't panic. The Guide was therefore ghost-written by Dan Brown. G

another translation of that code is simple. make a table of the binary numerals, add the columns vertically, then add the sums horizontally.you get 42. alpha-numerically that is D.B. simply, Dan Brown.... signing off!!!

Beats me how any translation could cause the code not to work: after all, the numbers are the same, I may presume?

Damn translators!!!

this code doesnt working in Polish version of the book ;/

I spended some time trying to understand that code, i even thought about the numbers of chapters but in polish version that doesnt make sense :/

Haven't got the time right now, but treat it as a Caesarian Box and see what comes out of it. Do the Polish count from one to ten? ;-)

Posted by: leon at August 30, 2006 09:34 AM

that's a good one. it's just that in my copy the whole sequence starts with 129-10-93-... and it's a Polish translation. you think the code still works?

Um, I believe those were 747s, yeah? Also, ahem, not really very funny.

you're obviously over-interpreting.
There's no double meaning.

Posted by: Ramin at August 28, 2005 07:32 PM

1- In the last page of the book there are the following numbers:
128-10-93-85-10-128-98-112-6-6-25-126-39-1-68-78
2- If you go to the corresponding chapter and replace the number by the first letter of the beginnig of that chapter an rearrange them in what is called a Cesar Square, a 4 by 4 square, (the author gives you the explanation on the book) will come up to the following:
w e c g
e w h y
a a i o
r t n u
3- and then read from top to bottom, left to right it reads:
"we are watching you"

Another thing; ever since I discovered that you can use Google as calculator, it's my desktop calculator. Now when you Google on 128-10-93-85-10-128-98-112-6-6-25-126-39-1-68-78 you get of course all those hits, but Google also sees it as 129 minus 10 minus 93 etc., to end with -757.
Now image what had happened when the Book wasn't written and published in 1998 but a bit later, to be unveiled the first week of september 2001? Two 757's less?
